Optional Features
Asset Tracking, Meta Data Sync and Transcript Sync are off by default. The connector works fully without them. All three use one OAuth2 app in Bynder, separate from the editors' own logins.
| Feature | What it does | Bynder scopes it needs |
|---|---|---|
| Asset Tracking | Reports which pages use which assets to Bynder's Asset Usage API ("used on" in Bynder), and shows the same information in Umbraco on the Settings > Bynder dashboard and the Bynder tab on each page. Updates automatically when content is saved, trashed or deleted. | asset.usage:read, asset.usage:write |
| Meta Data Sync | Keeps a picked asset's alt text and copyright in sync with Bynder (Name, Description, Copyright) through a background job. Content doesn't need to be republished. If an editor overrides a value by hand, their value wins. | asset:read as well |
| Transcript Sync | Turns Bynder's speech-to-text transcript for a VIDEO or AUDIO asset into a WebVTT subtitle track. | Same credentials as Meta Data Sync |
1. Create the OAuth app in Bynder
- Sign in to Bynder as an administrator and open the OAuth Apps page under the portal settings.
- Create a new app with the Client Credentials grant type.
- Give it the scopes from the table above for the features you want.
- Copy the Client ID and Client Secret.
2. Configure it in Umbraco
Option 1: the backoffice
Go to Settings > Bynder > Configuration, enter the Client ID and Client Secret, and tick the features you want. A secret entered here is encrypted in the database and is never shown again. Use the built-in test buttons to check the connection.
Option 2: appsettings.json
{
"Bynder": {
"OAuth": {
"ClientId": "your-client-id",
"ClientSecret": "your-client-secret",
"AssetTrackingEnabled": true,
"MetaDataSyncEnabled": true,
"TranscriptSyncEnabled": false
}
}
}A ClientSecret in appsettings.json is not encrypted. Keep it out of source control. Use an environment variable (Bynder__OAuth__ClientSecret), user secrets or your hosting platform's secret store.
ClientId and ClientSecret are set and locked together. Each ...Enabled flag is locked on its own. If you leave a flag out, administrators can still change it in the backoffice.
3. Map metadata fields (Meta Data Sync)
Under Settings > Bynder > Configuration > Meta Data, choose which Bynder field (Name, Description or Copyright) fills which field on each media type. To lock the mapping for one media type in config:
{
"Bynder": {
"MetaDataFieldMapping": {
"Image": {
"Fields": {
"altText": "Description",
"copyright": "Copyright"
}
}
}
}
}Media types that aren't listed here stay editable in the backoffice.
4. Subtitles from transcripts (Transcript Sync)
Once Transcript Sync is on, syncing is automatic: as soon as Bynder has generated a transcript for a picked video or audio asset, a subtitle track becomes available to your templates. See Rendering Assets for how to output it.
